Trap Spacing: When trapping for woodborers or bark beetles, separate traps with different lure combinations by at least 30 meters (98 feet).
Method Notes: 06/06/2017: For negative data reporting, you may use one of the three approved lure combinations: 1) Z-3-hexenol lure (used alone) or 2) Z-3-hexenol lure + Manuka oil or 3) Z-3-hexenol + 3Z-Lactone with one of the approved traps: 1) the purple prism trap, 2) the green multi-funnel trap, or 3) the green prism trap.
06/05/17: The purple prism trap will remain the primary approved trap for EAB. In addition, a limited number of green multi-funnel traps will be available. The green prism trap is also approved for negative data reporting but will not be offered through the IPHIS Survey Supply Ordering System. If states choose to use the green prism trap they must purchase it on their own.
11/06/14: The revised 2014 Cerceris Wasp Survey Protocol is available in the References section below. In addition, a 2014 version of the Cerceris Letter has been posted as well. Please use these documents in future surveys.
07/29/14: For the 2015 survey season, the purple prism trap will remain the primary approved trap for EAB. In addition, a limited number of green multi-funnel traps will be available. Both traps are approved for negative data reporting.
03/12/14: Starting in the 2014 survey season, negative data for Agrilus planipennis may be entered from Pest Detection and CAPS Cerceris wasp surveys.
For surveys funded by the EAB program, Cerceris may not be used. These surveys should use the purple prism trap and approved lures.
Note that when using Cerceris wasps, you will now need to ensure that the appropriate host species (Ash for Agrilus planipennis and Oak for the other three Agrilus targets) is within a 200 meter (650 foot) radius of the sampling site.

Lure Attachment: Attaching lures to traps
IMPORTANT: Do not include lures for other target species in the trap when surveying for this target.
Lure Notes: 06/06/2017: The Z-3-hexenol lure (used alone) will remain the primary approved lure for EAB. There are two other approved lure combinations: 2) Z-3-hexenol lure + Manuka oil or 3) Z-3-hexenol + 3Z-Lactone. If you are using only the Z-3-hexenol lure, you do not need to add any other lures at this time.
05/22/2017: The 3Z-Lactone + Z-3-hexenol combination is approved for negative data reporting but 3Z-Lactone will not be offered through the IPHIS Survey Supply Ordering System. The combination is similar in effectiveness to the Z-3-hexenol Lure alone; however, the price of 3Z-Lactone is much higher. If states choose to use this 3Z-Lactone + Z-3-hexenol, they must purchase the 3Z-Lactone on their own.
07/29/14: For the 2015 survey season, the EAB program is discontinuing the use of the Manuka oil lure. Studies have shown that Manuka oil does not increase trap catches as compared to using the Z-3-hexenol lure by itself.
If you have leftover Manuka oil lures from previous seasons, please continue to use them in combination with the Z-3-hexanol lures.
For negative data reporting, either 1) Z-3-hexenol lure alone or 2) Z-3-hexenol lure + Manuka oil can be used with either the green multi-funnel trap or purple prism trap. Lure combinations using Phoebe oil have been removed X.
Survey Recommendations
The following are recommendations for executing the survey using the approved methods for pest surveillance. The recommendations are developed through literature review and consultation with subject matter experts.
Key Diagnostic or Identification
Approved Method(s)
ID/Diagnostic: Morphological: Members of the genus Agrilus are challenging to identify due to structural coloration and subtle morphological differences between species.
Mistaken Identities: Agrilus anxius, Agrilus bilineatus, Agrilus cyanescens, Agrilus masculinus, Agrilus obsoletoguttatus, Agrilus subcinctus, and Agrilus vittaticollis.
(There are 171 Agrilus species documented in America North of Mexico.)
